Health Care Intern Program (SCHIP) Program Requirements
• Students must have completed either their junior or senior
year of high school in a school district in proximity to the
facility. Or, they must be a post-secondary student enrolled in
a Minnesota educational institute or be a resident of Minnesota
enrolled in an out-of-state program.
Post-secondary students
must be enrolled, or plan to enroll in a 2-yr or 4-yr health
care degree program with the intention of completing the
program. Employers must balance the number of secondary and
post-secondary students to the extent that there are sufficient
qualifying applicants.
• Students are employed between Memorial Day and Labor Day for 6
to 12 weeks for at least minimum wage. Students work a minimum
of 6 weeks/120 hours to a maximum of twelve weeks/480 hours.
• Employers must interview and hire those students they feel
will be most likely to meet the expectations of the facility and
the SHCIP program. Students must complete application forms and
provide letters of recommendation.
• Possible intern duties include: registering patients, cleaning
equipment, sterilizing instruments, scheduling appointments,
restocking or preparing exam rooms, preparing or pulling charts,
transporting clients, entering or collecting data, answering
telephones, and assisting staff. Students should not be
routinely assigned to duties not associated with healthcare
careers such as lawn care or general maintenance or cleaning.
