| Summer
Health Care Intern Program (SCHIP)
The Summer Health Care Intern Program (SCHIP) brings students
and health care employers together, giving students experience
in a health care environment and employers the opportunity to
become more involved in their community.
Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the
Office of Rural Health & Primary Care, Minnesota Department of
Health. Up to half of the intern’s wages are reimbursed to
participating facilities that employ students under this grant
program.
Students benefit from this program by obtaining valuable
learning experience through hands-on activities and observation
of professionals. It assists them in career decision-making
while offering a summer income and the potential for immediate
or long-range employment opportunities.
Students interested in participating in the Summer Health Care
Intern Program are encouraged to complete and submit an
application along with their resume and letter of recommendation
by May 1st. The number of internships available, hours, duties,
and departments will be determined in mid-April.
To participate in the program, employers must be willing to help
students better understand a variety of health careers, duties
and health-related issues through scheduled employment duties
and scheduled observation opportunities. Interns are hired to
perform duties in a primary department but must be provided
opportunities for observation throughout the facility and
exposure to multiple health care careers.
