The Redwood Area Hospital along with many other hospitals nation wide, will soon be celebrating National Nurses Week. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. These permanent dates enhance planning and position National Nurses Week as an established recognition event. The nursing profession has been supported and promoted by the American Nurses Association (ANA) since 1896. The ANA, through its 54 constituent member associations, advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting economic and general welfare, promoting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and lobbying Congress and the regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public. Traditionally, National Nurses Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which nurses are working to improve health care. Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers. Nurse’s work in emergency rooms, school based clinics, and homeless shelters, to name a few. Nurse’s have many roles – from staff nurse to educator to nurse practitioner and nurse researcher – and serve all of them with passion for the profession and with a strong commitment to patient safety. Currently, the Redwood Area Hospital employs 59 registered nurses, 24 licensed practical nurses and 16 other support staff including home health aids, nursing unit secretaries and office support. The mission of the nursing departments at the Redwood Area Hospital is to provide quality healthcare through interdisciplinary collaboration, patient, patient advocacy and leadership. The Nursing department supports the organizations’ mission by serving with excellence, responding with compassion, listening with attention, touching with respect and treating with expertise.
