RE: Respiratory Illness Workshop
DATE: November 28, 2007

The Redwood Area Hospital will be hosting a “Respiratory Illness in Animal Feeding Operation Workers” workshop on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 from 9:00-10:30am. Presenting will be Dr. Steven R. Kirkhorn who serves as the Medical Director of the National Farm Medicine Center. This workshop will be held using our videoconference equipment with the presenter being live at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

The workshop will address issues surrounding agricultural workers that are exposed to a broad range of toxic materials including dusts (from cultivation, grain processes, animal confinement operations), gases (exhaust, ammonia), biological toxins (mites, dander, antigens, infectious agents) and many different chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers).

These exposures result in a variety of respiratory symptoms that may indicate a range of chronic or acute lung conditions and diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Participants will leave with a better understanding of health effects of workers in animal feeding operations and learn more appropriate personal protection strategies.

This workshop is free and open to the public. To register for this upcoming workshop call Shelly Pauling, Education & Communications Manager at 507-637-4527 or register on-line.
