RE: HCAHPS Survey Made Public
DATE: April 9, 2008

The first public HCAHPS report, which covers the fourth quarter of 2006 through the second quarter of 2007, indicates that the prevailing responses from patients admitted to Redwood Area Hospital (RAH) gave higher average marks than the Minnesota average or the national average.

The national survey response data from patients, regarding their experience at hospitals where they have been admitted, was made available to the public for the first time on March 28, 2008.

Adopted by the Hospital Quality Alliance, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems survey, HCAHPS, is the new national standard for collecting and publicly reporting information on patients’ experience with inpatient care. The HCAHPS data reveals just how patients perceive the care they received at hospitals across the nation.

A higher percentage of RAH responding patients said their expectations were “always” met. A higher percentage of RAH patients gave the hospital a 9 or 10 rating, on a scale of 1 to 10. A higher percentage of RAH patients said they would definitely recommend RAH hospital to others.

“It is always nice to get marks that are higher than the average for the state or the average for the nation, says hospital administrator Jim Schulte. I congratulate the hospital staff and physicians for the excellent care they provide that results in these positive perceptions from our patients. We are always trying to make improvements. We will continue to work at earning patient responses that are even higher than this initial report, but it is a good place to start,” says Schulte.
