RE: RAH Celebrates National Denim Day
DATE: October 8, 2008
October 3, 2008 wasn’t any ordinary casual Friday at the Redwood
Area Hospital. Hospital employees that chose to participate were
able to wear denim not only for comfort, but to make a powerful
statement for an important cause. As Lee National Denim Day
moves into its second decade, Redwood Area Hospital participated
for their second time in the grassroots program which has raised
more than $61 million for breast cancer research.
Employees were encouraged to wear denim in exchange for a $5
donation to the Women’s Cancer Programs of the Entertainment
Industry Foundation (EIF). Funds will be used to support a
groundbreaking scientific project to detect breast cancer in its
earliest stage. They will also help accelerate treatment
research and increase patient access to some of the most
significant clinical trials in the nation. “Lee National Denim
Day is extremely important to our employees and the communities
we serve, as many of them have been personally touched by the
disease. This is a way we may each take a moment to donate and
remember to care for ourselves,” said Cindy Moldan, Cancer Care
Coordinator.
Through EIF’s National Women’s Cancer Research Alliance and
support alliances, EIF funds some of the most promising research
being conducted today to develop new and more effective
approaches to the treatment of women’s cancers. EIF grants have
helped accelerate research that has contributed to the
development of a breakthrough gene treatment called Herceptin,
the first successful drug that seeks out a particular gene found
in one of three cases of the most aggressive form of breast
cancer.
“At the Redwood Area Hospital, we know first hand how effective
some of those breakthrough treatments with drugs like Herceptin,
Avastin, and others are because we use them to treat patients in
our Cancer Center. We know the importance of finding new
aggressive types of treatments early to help increase the chance
of cancer survival,” states Moldan.
